Will it hurt to run a ford 302 engine at a constant 3000 rpm for a long period of time?

I have a 68' ford with a 302 engine C4 transmission and a 2.79 rear end...Im under the umpsion that running this engine around 3000rpm around 70 mph is ok because these engines were designed in a period where there wasnt overdrive....thus making them better suited to do so...i understand that you will wear your engine out faster but whats with all these horror stories about people blowing up their engines all the time?????
