Why is my cat hyper at night? What can I do to tame him?

I work during the day, but as soon as I come home we play and play until I go to sleep, so he gets about 4+ hours of continuous play. I go to sleep and he goes insane from 4AM till I wake up at 7AM. I have tried waking up with him at 4 and playing for a bit, then going back to sleep, but he still continues to do this. When he misbehaves (ie scratching on my bed) he gets squirted with water. I have had him now for 1 year and still cannot get him adjusted to my schedule. He is neutered and only left alone for the 8 hours I am at work. Any ideas? Help!
